Walter Williams founded the world's first journalism school in 1908 at the University of Missouri. From the beginning the emphasis has been on practical experience. Faculty members include practicing journalists and top-flight scholars and researchers.

The "Missouri Method" emphasizes hands-on learning in laboratories such as a daily community newspaper, an NPR radio station, an NBC-affiliate TV station, plus news and information services published on the World Wide Web.
